THE BLACK & WHITE BALL: NYE 2017
Saturday, December 31st 2016 9pm-2am / VIP Entry at 8pm
The newly renovated Hyatt Regency Hotel
1300 Nicollet Mall • Minneapolis, MN 55403
It was the party to end all parties. In 1966, the renowned writer Truman Capote held the Black and White Ball in New York City's Plaza Hotel. The glitterati was out in full force as Hollywood starlets mingled with Presidents and socialites. Deemed "The Party of the Century", if you weren't invited, you simply left town.
This New Year's Eve in Minneapolis, we will celebrate the glamour and opulence of the original Black & White Ball. Don your finest New Year's Eve attire and enjoy an evening of sparkling spectacles in a vibrant party atmosphere. Leave the cares of the last year behind you as you immerse yourself in the sheer elegance of a bygone era brought to life.
Over-the-top production and dramatic decor have become landmarks of this thrilling event and in 2016 it was featured nationally on NBC's New Years Rockin' Eve with Carson Daly. Enjoy an evening of sparkling spectacles as fire performers thrill the crowd and aerialists soar high above. As you wander the party, discover mannequins come to life and dancers who inspire as we ring in 2017.
Guests will enjoy three rooms of music playing disco, dance, funk, top 40, old school, house and soul. Our DJ Line up for the evening includes Brother Jules, Brownie, Chuck Love, D Mil, Jeff Swiff, King Otto, Mike Mack and Strangelove.
Doors for this event will open at 8:00 for VIP guests, who are invited to enter through an exclusive VIP entrance with expedited check-in and complimentary coat check. From 8:00-9:00, VIP guests will be greeted with a complimentary glass of champagne. General admission guests can start their evening at 9:00.
The Hyatt Regency in Minneapilis recently underwent a $50 Million renovation, making this stunning venue the largest meeting and event space of any hotel in Minneapolis. We are excited to present our annual Minneapolis New Year's Eve party in this elegant and well-staffed venue.

The party of the year returns to Minneapolis this New Year's Eve with NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball, inspired by Truman Capote's masquerade ball in 1966. Held at the prestigious Hyatt Hotel and featuring 8 DJs in three rooms of nonstop disco, dance, funk, top 40, old school, house and soul, the elegant affair will be a not-to-be-missed night of dancing and dazzling spectacles.
Fans definitely won't forget this year's set by Prince's official lifetime DJ, Brother Jules. A Minneapolis local, Brother Jules grew up in Minneapolis in the height of the '80s with his ears glued to 89.9 KMOJ FM. Beginning with DJ sets at Bernadette's in uptown, Brother Jules had his first DJ gig at First Ave by the time he was 15. This led to an invitation to DJ Saturday nights at Glam Slam, a club owned and operated by Prince. The rest was history as Brother Jules and Prince grew closer in their fifteen year relationship that included six world tours and hundreds of afterparties. After Prince's passing in April, Brother Jules toured the country sharing his last project with Prince, The Remix Experience. Throughout the years, his success has led him to work with other stars, too, such as Janet Jackson, Shaq, Oprah Winfrey, and P. Diddy. He also now has a show on the very radio station he was inspired by as a teen, KMOJ Radio in Minneapolis.
As for his New Year's Resolution? Brother Jules hopes to keep his success going and make more money than he made in 2016. You don't become Prince's "official lifetime" DJ without that kind of drive. When asked what one of his favorite Prince moments was, Jules recounted broadcasting a New Year's Eve set with Prince. We expect NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball to be another New Year's Eve worth remembering.
This New Year's Eve, take part in an opulent affair reminiscent of 1966 and Truman Capote's legendary masquerade ball. NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball will be held at the recently renovated Hyatt Hotel in downtown Minnneapolis and will feature three rooms of disco, dance, funk, top 40, old school, and house from some of the Twin Cities' top DJs.
To channel a renowned party, NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball is enlisting the help of DJ Jeff Swiff, dance music authority and local legendary party starter. Jeff Swiff first encountered house music in his early teens, and he says those sounds seemed like they were setting the tone for how the rest of his life would feel. Over 15 years and a massive record collection later, Jeff has shared his own sounds throughout the world in the pursuit of playing music that other people enjoy just as much as he does. Although it's hard to pick just a few, some of the personal highlights in the DJ's career have included his current House Proud Residency and years of playing summertime dance party, Communion. An early favorite was playing music for Red Bull events, but Secret Stereo will always stand out as what Jeff calls hands-down the most vibey party to be played after hours. Now, you can catch Jeff Swiff at Alibi's Lounge on Saturdays or at this month's HotDish at Domo to prepare for what will definitely be the dance party of the year.
A DJ with irresistibly danceable jams and a solid philosophy, Jeff Swiff holds that "these sounds are essential, and these sounds belong to everyone." Get your ticket now to see Jeff Swiff at NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball, the essential experience for ringing in this New Year's Eve.
This New Year's Eve, immerse yourself in the opulence of a bygone era brought to life at NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball. Mingle like the stars of 1966 as you dance to the sounds of the Twin Cities' top DJs with three rooms of disco, dance, funk, top 40, old school, house and soul at the recently renovated and superbly stunning Hyatt Regency.
As a part of the evening's notable line-up, DJ King Otto will be spinning the jams for NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball. On a daily basis, King Otto brings bygone eras back to life through his impressive vinyl collection. King Otto is part of national DJ crew Hot Peas & Butta, opened for Public Enemy and Sir-Mix-A-Lot in the '90s, has DJ'd at parties all around the world, and really knows how to get a crowd going. It all started in Seattle circa 1985 when he would call into the local rap show and pick up all the tips he could from Nasty Nes, the DJ of the first all-rap radio station on the West coast. A few years later, King Otto's vinyl collection started taking shape when he started producing. Originally intended for sampling tracks, that vinyl collection would make any audiophile's head spin these days. As of late, the 45 has become King Otto's favorite. He considers them the closest you can get to physically holding music but also simply fun. Likewise, it's not all about fame for King Otto. His dream residency is just playing his 45's in a dingy bar on a weekly basis-just a great place for people to vibe out on quality music.
In the coming weeks, get your good vibes on with DJ King Otto every other Wednesday at Nightingale or second Saturdays at Honey for his long-running feel good night called SLAPS-going strong since 2010, and get ready for his new residency at Domo Gastro starting in the new year. Definitely don't miss King Otto as a part of NYE 2017: The Black and White Ball's all-star DJ line-up, or you might as well just leave town.
This New Year's Eve, party like the classic stars at Truman Capote's legendary masquerade ball. Inspired by the 1966 party that had the entirety of New York City abuzz, NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball will be held at the recently renovated Hyatt Hotel and features three rooms of music disco, dance, funk, top 40, old school, soul, and house from some of the Twin Cities' top DJ's.
Each year, Ignite Models and the team behind nyempls.com are on the pulse of the Twin Cities music scene, and NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball is no exception. When it comes to featuring the best of the incredible wealth of talent in the cities, no line up would be complete without DJ D.Mil. Most DJ's will say they grew up on hip hop, but it couldn't be more true of D.Mil. Raised on St. Paul's East Side, D.Mil spent much of his '80s childhood shadowing his older brother, Jim, a b-boy break dancer with the St. Paul Wild Style who introduced D.Mil to classic rap and the growing Twin Cities hip hop scene. When he turned 18, D.Mil bought a pair of Technics and a sound system. He says he hasn't looked back since, all the while amassing a national following and an impressive roster of residencies. Drawing inspiration directly from the crowd's reaction and momentum, D.Mil is always good for an energetic set that proves why he is one of the Twin Cities' most in-demand DJs.
To get your end of the year party started, tune in to hear DJ D.Mil live as the mixer for GO 95.3 FM's Mr. Peter Parker Show on weekdays at 5 pm. There's no doubt D.Mil will be accomplishing his New Year's resolution to continue inspiring people and parties, ending 2016 with the biggest one of the year. Don't miss your chance to finish this year off right with a live set from DJ D.Mil at NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball.
This New Year's Eve, channel the stars of the famous 1966 Black and White Ball while partaking in the best party of the year. Larger than ever before, NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball will be held at the gorgeously renovated Hyatt Hotel and feature three rooms of disco, dance, funk, top 40, old school, soul, and house from top Twin Cities' DJs.
With big resolutions and even bigger parties just around the corner, there's no better time to get to know Jay "Strangelove" Tappe. DJ Strangelove has been active in the local dance music scene and starting parties since the late '90s. Back then, seeing Terry Mullan play at a rave lit the fuse for what has become decades as a DJ for Strangelove. He picked up turntables, a mixer, and speakers and got to work, practicing every day in his bedroom for a year until he was ready to play in front of a crowd. His first gig was no small party either-this set at First Ave's 7th Street Entry led to Saturdays at First Ave, Mondays at Mpls Cafe, and slew of gigs for years to come. Now, Terry Mullan is still a source of inspiration, and Strangelove hopes to continue traveling the world to spread the love and joy of music.
Get stoked with DJ Strangelove at NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball. With a lot of hard work and positivity, DJ Strangelove made it happen. Like he says, "I can't believe I do this for a living. It's a great feeling being able to live out your dreams." This New Year's Eve, dance the night away to Strangelove's funky, uplifting set, and get inspired by this local DJ's good vibes.
This New Year's Eve in Minneapolis, celebrate like the stars of 1966 at NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball. Inspired by Truman Capote's legendary affair of a party, the gorgeous evening at the Hyatt Regency includes sparkling spectacles and three rooms of top DJ's playing disco, dance, funk, top 40, old school, house, and soul.
DJ Brownie began DJing when he was 14. With humble career beginnings, Brownie made it happen with just a basic Radio Shack mixer and two CD players that were different models and had no pitch controls. His first gigs were DJ'ing dances for his high school, and then later on the alumni would invite him to DJ parties. Beyond that, other acquaintances would go on to work at clubs in the Twin Cities and St.Cloud and get him in on gigs, including an 11 year stint at The Red Carpet Nightclub. Over the years, he's moved from playing Top 40 and popular dance tracks to incorporating more house music and influences from his wide array of musical inspiration, acknowledging that "being a fan of different kinds of music won't make a bad DJ good, but it can make a good DJ better. That enthusiasm and passion for music definitely shows when you perform. " While he ditched the dual cd player set-up for professional equipment many years ago, DJ Brownie's motivation remains the same-seeing people have a good time on the dance floor.
Catch Brownie at NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball as a part of the ultimate Twin Cities' DJ line-up this Saturday, and ring in the new year right. Tickets are going fast, so get yours today!
DJ Mike Mack
This New Year's Eve in Minneapolis, celebrate like the stars of the 1960's. Mike Mack brings his unique style and long DJ history to NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball, and this year he promises nothing but the best hottest old school hip hop and R&B. DJing since he was 13 years old, an original source of inspiration for Mike was a mix on cassette by Kid Capri, and later he would be introduced to the craft from a couple of friends spinning records. He was immediately hooked. By age 18, he met local promoter and DJ, Ray Seville, who would help him expand his skillset further. What began by spinning records at parties in the parks of North Minneapolis is now DJ Mike Mack's livelihood as a nationally recognized party DJ.
With a new year just around the corner, DJ Mike Mack is ready for whatever life throws at him. He has no need for New Year's resolutions, "I don't make them, I just go out and accomplish what I want to do." Take some initiative, and get your tickets for NYE 2017: The Black & White Ball today. Due to the New Year's Day football game in Minneapolis, city-wide demand for hotel rooms on 12/31 has skyrocketed and we have entirely sold out of our discounted block of hotel rooms at an unprecedented rate. While limited hotel rooms ARE still available at the Hyatt, the hotel will no longer allow us to offer our original hotel room rate for NYE guests. We apologize for this price change in hotel rooms; it was out of our control. Ticket prices to the event itself are not affected by this change.
